Scheduled as the Environment (Wales) Bill was debated in the National Assembly and following the release of the Welsh Government's Nature Recovery Plan and the Welsh National Marine Plan, this timely seminar brought together key policymakers and affected stakeholders to discuss the Welsh Government’s proposals to manage natural resources and support biodiversity - and the challenges for implementation.
Sessions examined proposals in the Bill for a new area-based approach to managing natural resources, as well as measures to address flood risk and mitigate the effects of climate change.
Delegates also discussed next steps for protecting the biodiversity of Welsh environment and how best to: safeguard species, habitats and ecosystems including steps to build resilience to invasive species; improve research, monitoring and surveillance; work with landowners and farmers to adapt resource management practices; tackle pollution; and ensure environmental concerns are addressed within the planning application process.
Delegates included Welsh Government officials and regulators as well as local authorities, developers, academics and research organisations; planning and environmental lawyers, representatives from the farming community and large estates, environmental and animal welfare bodies and pressure groups, and other interested parties.
