Bringing together key policymakers and stakeholders from across the teaching profession this timely seminar focused on the next steps for teacher training and professional development policy in Wales.
It followed the report, Teaching Tomorrow's Teachers, released in March 2015 by Professor John Furlong - the Welsh Government's Initial Teacher Education and Training Adviser - and the Welsh Government’s response accepting its recommendations for reform. It was also scheduled to follow the introduction of a new Professional Learning Passport - to record professional development - for every teacher, due in September 2015 as part of the Minister for Education and Skills' 'New Deal for Teachers'.
Delegates discussed the 40 wide-ranging recommendations put forward in Professor Furlong's report including the call for Initial Teacher Training degrees to be extended to four years, increased specialisation and higher entry standards for trainee teachers as well as a new tendering process for Initial Teacher Training institutions. Also central to discussion was the implementation of Professional Learning Passports and how to put the vision of the ‘New Deal for Teachers’ proposals, which include new School Development Plans of which workforce development will be an integral part, into practice
