The future of Wales’ healthcare workforce - investment, training and development, and new ways of working

This seminar provided an opportunity to discuss the future of Wales’ health workforce, following the Welsh Government’s announcement of a further £80m investment into education and training of healthcare professionals, including nurses, midwives, radiographers, paramedics and pharmacists.
Delegates also assessed the outcomes of the Welsh Government’s Health Professional Education Investment Review released in April 2015.
The conference took place as the Welsh Government prepared its response to the Review’s findings, and policymakers and key stakeholders shared thinking on the proposals to take a new strategic direction based on prudent healthcare principles - including the establishment of a new single body to bring together planning, workforce, education commissioning and workforce development and design aspects; development of a new strategic vision to deliver a long term workforce sustainability; improving lifelong learning and on-going training and development within the NHS; increasing support of community based training to support service redesign; greater emphasis on the use of multi-disciplinary teams and increased incentives and engagement for young people.
Further sessions considered whether the Review sufficiently addressed current concerns in healthcare, with focus on the challenges presented by an ageing workforce; recruitment and retention issues of healthcare professionals, especially GPs, across Wales - particularly rural and Mid Wales; improvements to planning medium and longer-term within the NHS; balancing incentives and the need to maintain attractiveness of professions with the pressure for further budgetary consolidation; and strengthening the quality of care delivery following patient care controversies.
