The Welsh Government set an ambitious goal of delivering an additional 100,000 Apprenticeship starts over the 5-year Assembly term, this conference was an opportunity to discuss the practical challenges for government, employers and training providers in order to deliver this.
Delegates discussed steps that can be taken to improve demand by more effectively promoting the Apprenticeship route to young people and also to improve supply by engaging more employers, particularly SMEs, in recruiting apprentices. Sessions included discussion on increasing the number of Higher (degree equivalent) Apprenticeships; the future funding arrangements for Apprenticeships - in light of on-going discussions over how the new UK-wide Apprenticeship Levy will impact Wales - and also the next steps in the development of new frameworks for the standards and assessment of Apprenticeships in Wales.
