This timely conference provided an opportunity to consider the next steps for policy affecting the energy sector in Wales. It followed the Silk Commission's recommendation that all energy projects which produce up to 350MW should be devolved to the Welsh Government and the March 2014 release of the Welsh Government's Energy Wales Delivery Plan. It also took place as the House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee continued its series of inquiries on energy issues in Wales.
Delegates discussed the future of energy production in Wales, including the proposed nuclear site at Wylfa and the potential options for shale gas, wind, solar and marine power generation. They also considered policy options to ensure access to affordable and sustainable energy supply in Wales; how to secure greater investment in potential energy projects; and the practical considerations of devolving decisions concerning energy infrastructure and investment to the Welsh Government.
Attendees included key policymakers from UK and Welsh Government departments, together with stakeholders from the energy industry, energy-intensive businesses, consumer groups, environmental organisations, local authorities, academics, and others with an interest in these important issues.
