A year on from the launch of the network of ‘Pioneer Schools’ - established to help shape the design of the six Areas of Learning and Experience which will make up the new National Curriculum for Wales - this seminar was a timely opportunity to discuss the challenges and next steps for developing curriculum content.
It followed the Welsh Government’s full acceptance of Professor Graham Donaldson’s recommendations in the Review, Successful Futures, and the conference brought together key stakeholder perspectives to discuss the specific content that should feature in each of the six broad Areas of Learning and Experience (expressive arts; health and well-being; humanities; languages, literacy and communication; mathematics and numeracy; and science and technology). Sessions explored the possibility of new topics being included in the curriculum, meeting the challenges of the school-day time constraints, and the role that outside organisations could play in helping deliver the new content.
Delegates also discussed the implementation challenges of the new Digital Competence Framework from September 2016 and plans to replace ICT with Computer Science in the new curriculum.
