This seminar brought together policymakers and key stakeholders to discuss priorities for older people’s care in Wales.

Delegates considered the prioritisation of integration, and the resources for, and the development of, new models of care for older people.

Discussion also took place on the opportunities for improving the regulation and governance of older people’s care - in response to varying standards - as well as the future role of bodies including health boards, local authorities and private care organisations in the effective delivery of these services.

Attendees also discussed the way ahead for enhancing standards in care homes following the report from the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, which called for renewed focus from the Welsh Government to improve the quality of life of older people living in care homes in Wales.

Further sessions on the day considered:

  • Creating a ‘dementia friendly Wales’ - assessing the effectiveness of the Dementia Action Plan and priorities for improving diagnosis, care and support;
  • Recommendations from the final report of the Parliamentary Review - looking at public involvement, skills and workforce challenges, technology, infrastructure, innovation and governance, as well as best practice for care delivery;
  • Regulating and enhancing older people’s care;
  • The future for financing older people’s care in Wales - looking at the cost of caring for an ageing population, focusing on demands on social care services; and
  • Implementing new models of care for older people - integration, quality, efficiency and service delivery.
