This seminar discussed key issues for the future of research and innovation in Wales.

It was an opportunity to discuss the ongoing review conducted by Professor Graeme Reid into notable areas of innovation and research activity and the way it is used in Wales.

Delegates examined the changes to the research funding landscape at UK level and in Wales specifically - discussing how the launch of UKRI may affect Wales, the funding announced in the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy and the potential impact of Welsh Government plans for a new TERCfW body to act as lead body for research and post-compulsory education in Wales.

Further sessions on the day considered:

  • How research and innovation might best be organised and targeted to produce potential benefits for the Welsh economy;
  • Further steps that might be taken to build on the success of the Sêr Cymru programme in growing Welsh science and research;
  • Challenges for ensuring that local communities can benefit from research activity and innovative enterprise in Wales; and
  • Opportunities for increasing collaboration between research bodies and businesses across Wales and seizing global opportunities for research involving Wales.
